Before a funeral home quotes you anything, your state has already set its own prices and deadlines. One of them is the piece of paper that proves the death happened, and you can’t close a bank account, claim a pension, or sell a car without it. It costs $5 in Florida and New Mexico. It costs $35 in Utah. Same document, 7 times the price, set by which side of a state line the death happened on.

Every figure comes from MORTL’s guide for that state, where it sits next to the statute or agency page it was read from and a dated changelog of every time it moved. Nothing on this page was typed by hand. Correct a guide and the bill corrects itself.
A blank is a blank. Three jurisdictions publish no single price for a first copy. Massachusetts charges by how you ask, $20 in person and $42 for expedited mail. Nevada sets a range and lets each county pick inside it. Oregon charges the same for every copy, first or fifth. New Hampshire sets no dollar threshold for skipping full probate at all. New Jersey and Ohio set no day count for filing the certificate. Every one of those lines says so. None of them prints a zero, and none of them prints an average standing in for a law.
What the fee does not include. It’s the state office’s own price for one copy. Ordering online through a contractor adds a processing fee on top, extra copies in the same order are often cheaper, and who is even allowed to order one is state law. The full breakdown is here.
It will go out of date. Legislatures move these numbers and rarely announce it.
