The MORTL™ State Guides constitute original works of authorship. The selection, coordination, structure, and presentation of information in each guide is original and copyrightable, even where the underlying facts are in the public domain. The MORTL™ State-by-State Guides covering 50 states and Washington DC are original, independently researched and written works. While they reference publicly available laws and statutes, the guides themselves, including the writing, structure, data visualizations, "At a Glance" graphics, and editorial framing, are original works protected by copyright.
Information in the State Guides is provided for general educational purposes only and doesn’t constitute advice of any kind. Laws change. MORTL makes reasonable efforts to review and update state guides on a regular basis and when significant legal changes are identified, but can’t guarantee that all information is current at all times. Always consult official sources or a licensed professional in your state before acting.
MORTL is an informational publication. Nothing on this site, including articles, state guides, checklists, AI tools, provider listings, forms, downloadable resources, emails, or newsletters, constitutes legal, medical, financial, tax, mental health, funeral, hospice, or other professional advice.
Use of MORTL doesn’t create an attorney-client relationship, doctor-patient relationship, therapist-client relationship, fiduciary relationship, or any other professional relationship between you and MORTL, MORTL, Inc., its contributors, or any listed provider.
You should consult the appropriate licensed professional for advice specific to your circumstances before making legal, medical, financial, tax, funeral, hospice, or end-of-life decisions.
MORTL includes a directory of providers to help users find professionals and services that may be relevant to death planning, estate administration, grief support, funeral planning, and related needs.
A listing in the MORTL directory isn’t a recommendation, endorsement, guarantee, or referral. Providers are compiled from publicly available information and provider submissions. MORTL doesn’t independently verify every provider's license status, insurance status, pricing, availability, quality of service, client experience, disciplinary history, or outcomes.
Eligible providers may purchase featured placement. Paid cards are labeled “Featured” and “Sponsored Placement.” Payment affects directory order and tier features, but it doesn’t affect MORTL's editorial content, legal guides, or editorial conclusions. A paid listing doesn’t guarantee traffic, clicks, inquiries, leads, clients, or revenue.
Before hiring any provider, you should verify credentials directly with the appropriate state licensing board, confirm insurance and bonding where applicable, and ask for pricing in writing. You’re responsible for deciding whether a provider is appropriate for your situation.
MORTL may update, correct, suspend, or remove provider listings at its discretion. To report an issue with a provider listing, contact providerfeedback@mortl.com.

These Terms of Use are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Delaware and the United States of America, without regard to conflict of law principles. Most of MORTL is free. Some features are offered through a paid subscription ("MORTL Premium") or a one-time purchase, billed through our third-party payment processor.
Billing and renewal. Paid subscriptions are billed in advance on a recurring basis (monthly or annually, as selected at checkout) and renew automatically at the then-current price until you cancel. By subscribing, you authorize MORTL, Inc. to charge your payment method for each renewal term.
Featured provider subscriptions. Stripe saves the provider's payment method during MORTL's business review. No subscription or charge starts while the listing is pending. Approval makes the sponsored placement live immediately and starts the selected monthly subscription. Stripe attempts the first monthly charge within one day after approval. The subscription then renews monthly until cancelled.
Cancellation. You may cancel at any time from your account settings or by emailing hello@mortl.com. Cancellation stops future renewals; your access or placement continues through the end of the current subscription period. If a featured provider cancels after approval but before the first charge is attempted, the subscription ends before that charge.
Refunds. If you aren’t satisfied, email hello@mortl.com within 14 days of a charge and we’ll review your request. We generally refund the most recent payment on an annual plan within that window. Monthly charges and one-time purchases are non-refundable except where required by law. Premium gifts are an exception: checkout is blocked when the recipient can’t use another year, an existing Stripe subscriber receives the gift value as account credit, and MORTL automatically refunds a paid gift if it can’t be delivered or credited after payment. Approved refunds are returned to the original payment method.
Price changes. We may change subscription prices. Any change applies to your next renewal, and we’ll give you notice before it takes effect so you can cancel if you choose.
The free path for someone who has just experienced a death, the state guides, and core planning information aren’t gated behind any subscription and remain free.
