1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using MORTL™ (mortl.com), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, please do not use this site. MORTL™ reserves the right to update these terms at any time. Continued use of the site after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.

2. Ownership & Copyright

All content on MORTL™, including but not limited to the 50 State Guides plus Washington DC, articles, editorial features, data visualizations, graphics, charts, photographs, illustrations, copy, and the overall selection and arrangement of content, is the exclusive property of MORTL, Inc. and is protected by United States and international copyright law.

The MORTL™ State Guides constitute original works of authorship. The selection, coordination, structure, and presentation of information in each guide is original and copyrightable, even where the underlying facts are in the public domain. Unauthorized reproduction, redistribution, or derivative use of the guides, in whole or in part, is strictly prohibited.

3. Permitted Use

You may access and use MORTL™ for personal, non-commercial purposes only. Specifically, you may:

• Read and reference MORTL™ content for your own personal planning and education • Share links to MORTL™ pages on social media or in personal communications • Quote brief excerpts (no more than 50 words) with clear attribution to MORTL™ and a link to the original page

4. Prohibited Use

You may NOT, without prior written permission from MORTL™:

• Reproduce, copy, republish, or redistribute any MORTL™ content in whole or in substantial part • Scrape, crawl, or systematically extract content from MORTL™ using automated tools • Use MORTL™ content to train artificial intelligence or machine learning models • Create derivative works based on MORTL™ content, including summaries, paraphrases, or reformatted versions intended for distribution • Use MORTL™ content for commercial purposes, including in paid products, services, newsletters, or publications • Frame or mirror MORTL™ content on another website • Remove or alter any copyright, trademark, or proprietary notices from MORTL™ content

5. State Guides. Special Notice

The MORTL™ State-by-State Guides covering 50 states and Washington DC are original, independently researched and written works. While they reference publicly available laws and statutes, the guides themselves, including the writing, structure, data visualizations, "At a Glance" graphics, and editorial framing, are original works protected by copyright.

Information in the State Guides is provided for general educational purposes only and does not constitute advice of any kind. Laws change. MORTL makes reasonable efforts to review and update state guides on a regular basis and when significant legal changes are identified, but cannot guarantee that all information is current at all times. Always consult official sources or a licensed professional in your state before acting.

6. No Legal, Medical, Financial, Tax, or Professional Advice

MORTL is an informational publication. Nothing on this site, including articles, state guides, checklists, AI tools, provider listings, forms, downloadable resources, emails, or newsletters, constitutes legal, medical, financial, tax, mental health, funeral, hospice, or other professional advice.

Use of MORTL does not create an attorney-client relationship, doctor-patient relationship, therapist-client relationship, fiduciary relationship, or any other professional relationship between you and MORTL, MORTL, Inc., its contributors, or any listed provider.

7. Provider Directory

MORTL includes a directory of providers to help users find professionals and services that may be relevant to death planning, estate administration, grief support, funeral planning, and related needs.

A listing in the MORTL directory is not a recommendation, endorsement, guarantee, or referral. Providers are compiled from publicly available information. MORTL does not independently verify every provider's license status, insurance status, pricing, availability, quality of service, client experience, disciplinary history, or outcomes.

MORTL does not currently sell featured placement. If MORTL offers featured placement in the future, those placements are paid advertising or sponsorship placements and are labeled clearly, and while payment may affect where a provider appears in the directory, it does not affect MORTL's editorial content, legal guides, or editorial conclusions.

Before hiring any provider, you should verify credentials directly with the appropriate state licensing board, confirm insurance and bonding where applicable, and ask for pricing in writing. You are responsible for deciding whether a provider is appropriate for your situation.

MORTL may update, correct, suspend, or remove provider listings at its discretion. To report an issue with a provider listing, contact providerfeedback@mortl.com.

8. Trademarks

MORTL, Inc. is a Delaware corporation. "MORTL," the MORTL logo, and related names, logos, product names, and slogans are trademarks or service marks of MORTL, Inc. A federal trademark application for MORTL has been filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. You may not use MORTL's trademarks without prior written permission. All other trademarks, service marks, and trade names referenced on this site are the property of their respective owners.

9. Disclaimer of Warranties

MORTL™ is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. MORTL™ does not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of viruses or other harmful components. MORTL™ makes no representations about the accuracy, completeness, or suitability of any content for any purpose.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, MORTL, Inc. shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the site or its content.

11. Copyright Infringement (DMCA)

If you believe that content on MORTL™ infringes your copyright, please send a written notice to legal@mortl.com including: (1) identification of the copyrighted work claimed to be infringed; (2) identification of the allegedly infringing material and its location on the site; (3) your contact information; (4) a statement that you have a good faith belief the use is not authorized; and (5) a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on their behalf.

These Terms of Use are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Delaware and the United States of America, without regard to conflict of law principles. MORTL, Inc. is incorporated in the State of Delaware. Any disputes arising under these terms shall be resolved exclusively in the courts of Delaware.
