Important Notice

Do not enter sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, health records, or details about specific legal matters, into any form or AI tool on this site. MORTL is an information platform, not a secure channel for personal legal or medical data.

About This Policy

MORTL, Inc. ("MORTL," "we," "our," or "us") operates mortl.com, a platform covering death planning, estate law, grief, and end-of-life care. Because our subject matter involves topics that are personal, sensitive, and sometimes emotionally charged, we take data privacy seriously. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and what rights you have. It is written in plain English because you deserve to understand it.

A Note on Sensitive Subject Matter

MORTL covers topics that may be personally sensitive. Including grief, terminal illness, estate planning, and end-of-life decisions. We strongly advise you not to enter sensitive personal information (such as Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, health records, or details about specific legal matters) into any form, search field, or AI tool on this site. Our AI assistant (Ask MORTL) is a general information tool, not a secure channel for personal legal or medical data. If you need to share sensitive information with a professional, do so directly with that professional through a secure channel.

What We Collect

We collect information in three ways: 1. Information you provide directly: your email address (if you subscribe to our newsletter or create an account), your name and contact details (if you submit a form on our Contact, Partners, or For Employers pages), and any information you enter into our AI assistant or search tools. 2. Information collected automatically: pages visited, time on site, referring URL, browser type, and device type via analytics tools. We use this to understand which content is most useful. 3. Account data: if you create a MORTL account, we store your email address, name, and any preferences or checklist progress you save.

What We Do Not Collect

We do not collect Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, health records, or other sensitive personal data as part of our standard service. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has submitted data to us, contact us at privacy@mortl.com and we will delete it promptly.

How We Use Your Data

We use your data to: deliver the newsletter you opted into, respond to form submissions and inquiries, improve the site based on aggregate usage patterns, and operate and maintain your account if you have one. We do not sell your personal data. We do not use your data to make automated decisions that affect you. We do not share your data with advertisers.

Commercial Relationships and Data

MORTL may earn revenue through featured listings in our provider directory, sponsored content, employer benefit partnerships, reader subscriptions, and other commercial arrangements. If you interact with a featured or sponsored provider listing (for example, by clicking through to their website), that provider may have their own data collection practices governed by their own privacy policy. We are not responsible for third-party data practices. We do not share your personal data with featured providers unless you explicitly submit a form directed to them.

Cookies and Tracking

We use cookies to keep you logged in (if you have an account), remember your preferences, and collect anonymous analytics. We use analytics tools that may set their own cookies. You can disable cookies in your browser settings; some features (such as saved checklist progress) will not work without them. We do not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking for ad targeting.

Third-Party Services

We use a small number of third-party services to operate the site, including: email delivery services (for the newsletter), analytics providers, authentication services, and payment processors (for subscriptions or purchases). These services process data according to their own privacy policies. We select providers that take data privacy seriously and contractually prohibit them from using your data for advertising. A list of our current service providers is available on request at privacy@mortl.com.

Data Retention

Newsletter subscribers: we retain your email address until you unsubscribe. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email we send. Account holders: we retain your account data until you delete your account. Form submissions: we retain contact form submissions for up to 24 months for business purposes. Analytics data is retained in aggregate, anonymized form indefinitely.

Your Rights

You have the right to: access the personal data we hold about you, correct inaccurate data, request deletion of your data, and opt out of marketing communications at any time. California residents have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know what personal information we collect and the right to opt out of the sale of personal information (we do not sell personal information). EEA and UK residents have additional rights under GDPR, including the right to data portability and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@mortl.com. We will respond within 30 days.

Security

We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data against unauthorized access, loss, or disclosure. However, no internet transmission is completely secure. Do not transmit sensitive personal or financial information through our site. If you believe your data has been compromised, contact us immediately at privacy@mortl.com.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify subscribers by email. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
