What Actually Kills Dogs and Cats

Young pets die of things you can prevent. Old pets die of cancer, kidneys, and hearts. Here is what the necropsy data actually shows, and the three numbers worth knowing before you pick a dog.

There are two stories here

People ask what pets die of like there's one answer. There are two, and they barely overlap.

Young animals die of accidents and infections. Cars, trauma, viruses. Fast, preventable, and devastating precisely because it didn't have to happen.

Old animals die of cancer, kidneys, and hearts. Slow, mostly not preventable, and the thing you'll actually be planning for.

Below is what the data shows, from necropsy records and long-term cohort studies rather than vibes. Some of it is genuinely useful before you pick an animal. Some of it will just make you go check on your cat.

Cats

The most detailed American picture comes from UC Davis, which examined 3,108 cats over thirty years.[1] Median lifespan was 9.07 years, and 9.92 years for cats who made it past their first birthday.[1]

If that sounds low, it's because it includes every cat who died young. Plenty of cats reach their late teens.

What killed them:

  • Cancer, 35.8 percent. By far the leading cause.[1]
  • Kidney failure, 10.8 percent.[1]
  • Feline infectious peritonitis, 6.7 percent.[1]
  • Heart disease, 5.2 percent.[1]

Age splits it cleanly. Cats who died of cancer were the oldest, a median of 11.43 years. Cats who died of infections were the youngest, a median of 3.45 years.[1]

Here's the number that should change how you think about your cat: kidney disease was found in 62.8 percent of all cats examined, even though only 13.1 percent actually died of it.[1] Most older cats have some kidney damage. It's close to universal. It's also slow, which means catching it early with bloodwork buys real time.

Now the part about outdoor cats. A UK study followed 2,190 cats from kittenhood, and among those who died before age 8, road traffic accidents accounted for 45.6 percent. For kittens under a year it was 61.2 percent.[2] Outdoor access is more common in the UK, so that figure is not a straight transfer to the US, but the direction is not ambiguous. The single largest killer of young cats is cars.

81 percent of the cats in that study made it to age 8.[2]

Dogs

For dogs, cancer is the headline, but the honest answer is that it depends enormously on the breed you chose.

A study comparing US, Finnish, and UK breed data found cancer deaths ranging from 4 percent in Miniature Pinschers to 55 percent in Bernese Mountain Dogs.[3] That's not a small spread. That's the difference between cancer being a footnote and cancer being the most likely way your dog dies.

The pattern behind it is size. Larger breeds carry a much higher cancer risk than small ones.[3] More cells dividing over a lifetime means more chances for something to go wrong.

So when people say "cancer is the leading cause of death in dogs," that's true on average and close to meaningless for your specific dog. A Bernese and a Miniature Pinscher are living different statistical lives.

Age changes the answer completely. The largest study of its kind pulled 74,556 dog deaths from the Veterinary Medical Database across twenty years.[4] Young dogs died disproportionately of gastrointestinal and infectious causes. Older dogs died of neurologic and cancer-related causes. The risk of dying from cardiovascular, endocrine, and urogenital disease climbed steadily with age.[4]

Size shifted it again, and not only through cancer. Larger breeds died more often of musculoskeletal and gastrointestinal causes, while smaller breeds died more often of endocrine disease.[4] The bloat risk that owners of deep-chested dogs get warned about lives inside that gastrointestinal number.

Why big dogs die young

This is the one that surprises people, so here is the number.

Across breeds, the relationship between weight and lifespan works out to roughly 13.3 minus 0.08 times body weight in kilograms, in years.[3]

In plain terms: every kilogram costs about a month of life. Every ten pounds costs roughly five months.

Run it and it tracks with what you already suspect. A 5 kg (11 lb) dog projects to around 12.9 years. A 30 kg (66 lb) dog projects to around 10.9. A 60 kg (132 lb) dog projects to around 8.5.

There's a grim wrinkle. The cancer risk that climbs with size actually plateaus in the very largest breeds, over 60 kg, and not for a good reason. Those dogs die of other things first.[3]

None of this is an argument against big dogs. It's an argument for knowing what you signed up for. If you bring home a Great Dane, you are signing up for a shorter story, and a senior dog at seven.

What is actually preventable

Sorting the list into things you can affect and things you cannot.

Genuinely preventable:

  • Cars. The largest single killer of young cats. Indoor cats, or a catio, or leash training. This one is not close.
  • Trauma generally. Fencing, leashes, and not letting a dog ride loose in a truck bed.
  • Some infections. Core vaccines exist for a reason, and they matter most in the first year, which is exactly when infectious deaths cluster.
  • Obesity. It is not on the cause-of-death list because it kills through other things: joints, hearts, diabetes, and a lower tolerance for anesthesia when a real problem shows up.

Detectable early, which is nearly as good:

  • Kidney disease in cats. Present in most older cats. Annual bloodwork after about age 7 catches it while diet and fluids still help.
  • Heart disease. A murmur found at a routine exam is a much better starting point than collapse.
  • Cancer. Not preventable, but early is a different disease than late. Learn your animal's normal lumps so you notice a new one.

Not preventable: the breed you chose, and time. You cannot exercise a Bernese out of its odds.

What this means for you

Three practical takeaways.

Know your animal's actual clock. A cat is a senior around 10 or 11. A Great Dane is a senior at 6 or 7. Vets start screening at those marks for a reason, and "he's only seven" is not reassurance for a giant breed. It's the point where you start paying attention.

Bloodwork before symptoms. By the time a cat is visibly sick with kidney disease, most of the function is already gone. Cats hide illness with unnerving skill; it's what they're built to do. A yearly blood panel is the only way you find out early.

Decide about money before the emergency. The worst time to learn what you can spend is at 11 p.m. in an emergency clinic with a number in front of you. Pet insurance, a dedicated savings account, or an honest personal limit are all legitimate answers. Having no answer is the one that leads to decisions you'll replay for years.
