The Family Book
what only you know, in your words.

The recipe you make without measuring. The story behind your name. The things you always say, and the people and places your family only knows through you. Type it or say it, a little at a time, and print it as a book.

1. Recipes

Write it the way you make it. Skip the measurements you never use.

Save it to a free account

A free account keeps one recipe and one story on every device you sign in on. It also:

  • Keeps your checklist ticked on every device.
  • One thing to do each morning, by email, if you want it.
  • Your state's rules on the items that depend on them.

What you type stays in this browser until you make the account, then moves into it.

What else goes in the book

One story comes with the free account too. The rest of the book is Premium.

  • Stories. The ones your family asks you to tell again, and the ones they’ve never heard.
  • Sayings. The things you say so often your family could finish the sentence.
  • People. Old friends, the cousin nobody calls, the neighbor who helped. Who they are and why they matter.
  • Places. Where you grew up, where you met, the places you’d go back to.
  • What I want remembered. For the record, in your words. Skip any you don’t want to answer.

The short answer

Write down what only you know: the recipes you make without measuring, the stories your family asks for, the things you always say, and the people and places they only know through you. Type it or say it out loud, one recipe or story at a time, then print it as a book for each household. It has no legal force and leaves nothing to anyone.

About this tool

What The Family Book helps you do

Write down the recipes, stories, sayings, people and places only you know, in your own words, and print them as a book for your family. Start with the recipe people ask you for and the story you tell most. Write the way you talk. When the book has a few pages, print a copy for each household and give it to them while they can still ask you about it.
