Cremation: What Actually Happens and What It Really Costs

A direct cremation, with no viewing or ceremony, costs $2,202 on average in the United States in 2026, and low-cost cremation networks sell complete packages for $495 to $1,495 depending on location.^[5] A funeral with a viewing and ceremony followed by cremation runs a national median of $6,280, per the National Funeral Directors Association's most recent General Price List study.^[9]

The cremation is identical in both. The price difference is everything sold around it: embalming, facilities and staff, vehicles, printing, and the funeral home's nondeclinable $2,495 basic services fee.^[9] This guide itemizes both prices, walks through what physically happens during a cremation, answers how long it takes, and covers the federal rights that protect you from overpaying.

Cremation is now the majority choice. NFDA projected a 63.4 percent U.S. cremation rate for 2025 and expects 82.3 percent by 2045.^[3] Deciding between the two dispositions? Start with cremation vs. burial.

Cremation without services is called direct cremation: the body is cremated shortly after death, without embalming, and there's no viewing or ceremony with the body present.^[2] The remains are returned to the family, and any memorial you hold afterward is separate and up to you. It's generally one of the lowest-cost disposition options.

One vocabulary note: "direct cremation," "simple cremation," and "basic cremation" commonly refer to the same arrangement. Confirm the exact inclusions on the provider's General Price List.

The national average price for a direct cremation in 2026 is $2,202, with state averages running from $1,264 in Oregon to $3,183 in North Dakota.^[5] Discount cremation networks advertise all-inclusive packages from $495 to $1,495 depending on location.^[5]

A quoted direct-cremation price should cover transport of the body, refrigerated holding, filing of the death certificate and permits, the crematory fee, an alternative container, and return of the remains. Confirm each item. If the funeral home doesn't own its own crematory, the crematory fee may be added on top of the quote.^[2] Ask for the complete total in writing.

Price alone doesn't establish quality. Confirm the provider's license, exactly who will hold and cremate the body, how identity is tracked, when the remains will be returned, and how complaints are handled.

The $2,202 national average hides a wide spread. Oregon at $1,264, Nevada at $1,428, and Arizona at $1,430 sit at the low end. North Dakota at $3,183, Iowa at $2,992, and Nebraska at $2,969 sit at the high end.^[5] Differences reflect local competition, labor, real estate, transportation distance, crematory access, and what the quoted package includes.

The spread inside a single city is worse. The same direct cremation can differ by more than $2,000 between providers in the same city.^[5] Funeral homes must quote prices over the phone if you ask,^[1] so three calls will show you your local market before you sign anything.

The median cost of a funeral with viewing and cremation is $6,280, per the NFDA's 2023 General Price List study. That number is the sum of eleven median line items:^[9]

• Nondeclinable basic services fee: $2,495
• Removal and transfer of the body to the funeral home: $395
• Embalming: $845
• Other preparation of the body: $295
• Facilities and staff for the viewing: $475
• Facilities and staff for the funeral ceremony: $550
• Service car or van: $175
• Basic memorial printed package: $195
• Cremation fee: $400
• Alternative cremation container: $160
• Urn: $295

Read the list again. The cremation fee is $400 and the container is $160. The other $5,720 buys services, facilities, and staff time, and most of those items are optional. Skip the viewing and the body-present ceremony and the embalming, preparation, and facility charges can come off the bill. The basic services fee stays on every arrangement.^[9]

A common middle option is direct cremation followed by a memorial with the urn present, at whatever venue fits: a home, a place of worship, a park, a bar. That keeps the gathering and removes the embalming, casket, and body-present facility charges. The FTC Funeral Rule gives you five rights that matter here:^[1]

• Prices over the phone. Funeral directors must give you price information on the telephone if you ask, and you don't have to give your name, address, or phone number first.
• The itemized list. The funeral home must give you a General Price List that's yours to keep when you meet in person to discuss arrangements.
• Buy individual items. You have the right to buy goods and services separately. After you choose, the home must give you a written statement listing every item you selected, its price, and the total.
• No casket required. No state or local law requires a casket for cremation. A funeral home that offers cremation must tell you alternative containers are available.
• Bring your own urn. A provider can't refuse a casket or urn you bought elsewhere or charge you a fee for handling it.

Call several providers and ask for the complete price of direct cremation, including the alternative container and every fee. Request the General Price List. Review optional items such as upgraded urns, urn vaults, printed materials, keepsake jewelry, and online memorial products, then keep only the ones you want.

Every cremation follows the same sequence, whether it costs $495 or sits inside a $6,280 funeral.^[5][9]

• 1. Transfer. The provider takes the body into its care and holds it, usually under refrigeration. Direct cremation doesn't include embalming.^[2]
• 2. Paperwork. The death certificate is completed, the person with the legal right to control disposition signs a cremation authorization, and the provider obtains any required permit. In most states, a funeral director must secure explicit authorization before cremating, and a properly completed death certificate is a prerequisite for getting it.^[10]
• 3. Container. The body goes into a container that's rigid, completely enclosed, leak resistant, and combustible.^[4] A casket qualifies. So does a cardboard alternative container.^[1]
• 4. Device removal. Staff verify identity and remove pacemakers, which can explode in the chamber.^[7]
• 5. The cremation. The chamber runs 1,400 to 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit, and the cremation takes from about 30 minutes to more than two hours depending on body size.^[4]
• 6. Processing. An operator removes the bone fragments, separates out metal, and processes the fragments to a uniform size smaller than an eighth of an inch.^[4]
• 7. Return. The remains, four to six pounds for an adult, go into the urn you chose or a plain container if you didn't choose one.^[4]

Cremation is irreversible, and the required documents depend on the law where the cremation will occur and the provider's written procedures. A funeral home or crematory may require completed vital-records documents, a disposition or transit permit, authorization from the person who has the legal right to control disposition, and a release from a coroner or medical examiner when the death falls under that office's jurisdiction.

In most states, the funeral director must secure explicit authorization before a body can be cremated, and a properly completed death certificate is a prerequisite for obtaining it.^[10]

Some states impose a waiting period before cremation. Ohio, for example, prohibits cremation until at least 24 hours have elapsed since the death as shown on a complete death certificate, and requires a burial or burial-transit permit plus a completed cremation authorization first.^[6]

Other states set different timing and authorization rules. Check the current law in the state where the cremation will occur, ask the provider to identify every legal prerequisite in writing, and use your state's page in our state guides for its paperwork.

The chamber is called a retort. The building that houses it is a crematory, or crematorium. The retort runs between 1,400 and 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit.^[4] The body goes in inside a rigid combustible container, either a casket or a cardboard alternative container, which any funeral home offering cremation must tell you about.^[1] The cremation itself takes from about 30 minutes to more than two hours, depending on body size and the stored heat in the chamber.^[4]

Crematories say "cremated remains" because the common word, ashes, is inaccurate. What's left in the chamber is bone: fragments of mostly calcium phosphates, white to gray in color.^[4] An operator removes them, pulls out any metal, then runs the fragments through a processor, a machine with blades that reduces them to pieces smaller than an eighth of an inch.^[4] That uniform gray-white material is what families receive.

An adult's cremated remains weigh four to six pounds.^[4] They come back in the container you selected, or a plain plastic or cardboard container if you didn't select one. A decorative urn is optional.

Before a cremation can legally happen, the death certificate must be completed, including the cause-of-death section certified by a physician, medical examiner, or coroner. In most states the provider must then obtain explicit authorization for disposition, and a properly completed death certificate is a prerequisite for it.^[10]

When a death falls under a medical examiner or coroner's jurisdiction, the cremation waits on that office's certification. Some states add a mandatory waiting period on top: Ohio prohibits cremation until at least 24 hours after the time of death.^[6]

So plan on hours for the cremation and days for everything around it: certificate completion, authorization, permits, any waiting period, transport, and the provider's schedule. Ask for a written estimate of when the remains will be ready and what could delay them, and ask how the body will be cared for while you wait. Waiting periods and permit rules are state law. Pacemakers come out before cremation because their batteries explode in the chamber. In a survey published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, 47 percent of responding crematoria staff had personal experience of a pacemaker explosion. The most common damage was to cremator doors and brickwork, and one case injured staff.^[7] The cremation authorization form asks about implanted devices for exactly this reason. Answer it accurately. The funeral home arranges the removal.

Everything else metal survives the fire: hip and knee replacements, surgical pins and plates, dental work, container hardware. Operators separate the metal from the bone fragments before processing.^[4] If you want an implant returned, ask before the cremation. After processing, it's gone.

Some crematories offer witnessed cremation, allowing a small group to be present when the body enters the chamber. Witnessing may matter for religious, cultural, or personal reasons. Ask the relevant faith leader what the rites require and the crematory what the facility permits. If the provider charges for witnessing, ask to see it on the General Price List.

The Funeral Rule requires that list to show every service the home sells and its price.^[1] Confirm availability before signing, because some facilities have no viewing room and accept no visitors.

Cremated remains can be kept at home, buried in a cemetery plot, placed in a columbarium niche, or scattered.^[2] Rules attach to specific places:

• At sea: scattering must happen at least three nautical miles from land. The EPA's general permit under the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act covers you automatically, with no application, but you must notify the EPA within 30 days, and anything placed in the water with the remains must be readily decomposable. No plastic flowers.^[8]
• Public land: rules come from the agency managing the land. Many parks require a permit. Ask first.
• Private land: get the property owner's permission and check local rules.
