The Honest Answer

You searched a question that does not have one full answer. That is not a failure of science or a gap that a better study will close next year. Part of the question is measurable, part of it is being studied right now, and part of it may never be knowable by anyone who is still alive to report back.

So this splits into three honest layers. The first is the body: what physically happens in the minutes, hours, and days after the heart stops. That part is well documented. The second is the experience: whether anything is felt, and what people who were resuscitated actually describe. That part has real research behind it, and it is easy to overstate. The third is what comes after, if anything does. That part is belief. Nobody has evidence, and anyone who tells you they are certain is selling you certainty.

We will keep those three apart on purpose, because most writing on this question blends them until you cannot tell a measurement from a hope. Here is each one, plainly.

What Happens to the Body

Death is not a single instant. It is a sequence, and it starts with oxygen.

The brain is about 2 percent of your body weight but uses roughly 20 percent of its oxygen, and it holds almost no reserve. When the heart stops pumping, blood stops moving, and the brain is cut off. Consciousness goes within about 10 seconds. Brain damage begins within about four minutes without oxygen, which is why the first minutes of CPR decide so much.[1] This is also why the "someone just died" moment is so time-bound: the window where anything can be done is short.

Once the heart has stopped for good, the changes that forensic examiners use to estimate time of death begin in order:

  • Livor mortis. Blood is no longer pumped, so it settles by gravity to the lowest parts of the body and stains the skin a bluish-purple. It appears within about half an hour to two hours and becomes fixed at around 12 hours.[2]
  • Rigor mortis. Muscles stiffen as their chemistry breaks down. It starts in the small muscles of the face at about two hours, completes across the body between six and eight hours, holds for around 12 more hours, and then resolves at roughly 36 hours as the muscle tissue itself begins to break down.[2]
  • Algor mortis. The body stops generating heat and cools toward the temperature of the room, at a rough rule-of-thumb rate near 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit per hour.[2]

These are estimates. Real timing shifts with temperature, body size, clothing, and where the body is. Past about 72 hours, later decomposition takes over. None of this is pleasant reading, and none of it is a secret. It is simply what a body is once it is no longer being run.

The Brain Does Not Switch Off Cleanly

Here is where the biology gets genuinely strange, and where it is easiest to reach too far. The dying brain does not just fade to flat. In the seconds around cardiac arrest, it can fire hard.

In a 2013 study at the University of Michigan, researchers recorded continuous EEG in rats undergoing cardiac arrest. Within the first 30 seconds after the heart stopped, the animals produced a surge of synchronized gamma-wave activity, the fast, coordinated rhythm associated with conscious processing. The activity was highly organized, and by some measures it exceeded what the same brains showed while awake.[3]

In 2023, the same lab reported EEG from four dying human patients as life support was withdrawn. Two of the four showed a similar surge of gamma activity, and in one patient it spiked to levels far above normal waking signal, in regions of the brain tied to conscious experience.[4]

Read that carefully. What was measured is electrical activity. That is real, recorded, and repeatable. What it means is not measured. A gamma surge is a pattern of neurons firing, not a report of anything felt. The researchers themselves said measuring signal in a dying brain is one thing, and knowing what, if anything, it was like from the inside is another.[3] The honest statement is narrow: the brain can generate intense, organized activity in the seconds around death. Whether that activity carries an experience, we cannot yet say.

What Survivors Actually Report

The people who might tell us something are those whose hearts stopped and who were brought back. They have been studied directly.

The largest recent effort is the AWARE II study, run across 25 hospitals in the United States and United Kingdom and published in 2023. Of 567 in-hospital cardiac arrests, 53 patients survived, and 28 were well enough to be interviewed afterward. Of those 28, 11 (about 39 percent) had memories or perceptions suggestive of some awareness. Six of the 28 (about 21 percent) described what the researchers called a recalled experience of death, a structured account often including a sense of separation from the body, review of their life, and a return. Two others emerged into consciousness during CPR itself.[5]

The study also placed EEG monitors on some patients during resuscitation. In some, normal-looking brain-wave patterns tied to consciousness reappeared out of a flatline state as long as 35 to 60 minutes into CPR.[5][6]

Split the evidence from the interpretation again, because this is exactly where writing on the subject tends to cheat. The evidence: survivors gave consistent, structured accounts, and monitors recorded brain activity deep into resuscitation. That is documented. The interpretation: whether those accounts are memories of consciousness that continued after the heart stopped, or reconstructions the brain assembled as it recovered, is not settled, and the researchers say so. The reports are data. What they prove about consciousness and death is still an open question, not a closed one.

What People Believe

Everything past the last section is belief, and billions of people hold one. They deserve to be described plainly and without ranking.

Christianity, Islam, and Judaism broadly hold that the person continues after death, with traditions of resurrection, judgment, and an afterlife, though the specifics vary widely within each. Hinduism and Buddhism broadly hold that consciousness continues through rebirth, shaped by how a life was lived, with the aim of eventually stepping out of that cycle. Many Indigenous and folk traditions describe the dead continuing among ancestors or in another country of the living. A large and growing number of people hold no belief in any afterlife at all, and expect that death is simply the end of experience, the way it was before they were born.

No study can test any of these. That is not a knock on any of them. It is the nature of the claim. A belief about what happens after death is, by definition, about the one place no evidence returns from.

So here is the line MORTL will hold to. Nobody knows what happens after you die. Not a priest, not a scientist, not a person who wrote a bestseller about the tunnel and the light. The people worth trusting on this are the ones who say plainly that they do not know. Anyone who offers you certainty is selling it.

What You Can Actually Know

Here is the part nobody markets, because it is not mysterious. What happens to your body, your money, and your accounts after you die is knowable, written into law, and largely up to you if you handle it in advance.

Your stuff. Most of what you own does not pass to anyone automatically. It goes through probate, the court process that validates a will, pays debts, and transfers what is left. The first days. When someone dies, the people left behind face a specific, time-sensitive list: pronouncement, the death certificate, notifications, the body. The question you searched has an unknowable half and a knowable half. Nobody can tell you what death is like from the inside. Everybody can tell you what it does to the paperwork. Handle the half you can. It is the part your family will actually have to live through.
