Every alternative on this page sells or gives away the same documents a different way: free (FreeWill), cheaper tiers with attorney consultations that renew (LegalZoom), software with a small renewal (Nolo WillMaker), a membership (Rocket Lawyer), one flat price (GoodTrust), a first-year price then a yearly fee (Gentreo), or the explanations and official forms with no sale at all (MORTL). Each one says it isn't a law firm.

What Trust & Will is

Trust & Will, in its own words.

Trust & Will describes itself in its footer as "an online service providing legal forms and information." Its plans are "Attorney-designed plans, customized by you," specific to your state. A Will Plan includes a last will, a HIPAA authorization, a living will and a power of attorney. A Trust Plan adds a revocable living trust, a pour-over will, a certification of trust, a schedule of assets and a funding guide. Its FAQ says to sign and notarize the documents when you receive or download them.

Published cost: Will Plan $199, or $299 for a couple. Trust Plan $499, or $599 for a couple. Attorney Support is $299 for one year of phone access, optional, and its page lists it as unavailable in Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Oregon, Louisiana, South Carolina and Tennessee. The Essentials membership is $49 a year for an AI assistant, a digital vault and one free document shipment. Its FAQ says you can pay in four equal interest-free payments. Its terms say purchases are final and refunds are discretionary.
Free tier: No free documents. The "Basic" membership tier is free and means no ongoing membership after you buy a plan.
Legal documents: Every page carries: "We are not a law firm, we do not provide legal advice, and the online forms we provide are not a substitute for the advice or services of an attorney." Its terms describe the error review as an automated check for completeness, spelling and internal consistency.
Account: Required to build, download and update a plan. Digital copies are free to download and print, per its FAQ.

FreeWill makes a last will, an advance healthcare directive, a durable financial power of attorney and beneficiary designations, and offers a revocable living trust, which its home page says is for California residents. You answer questions and download a PDF to print and sign in front of two witnesses. Its site says the tools are free because more than 2,400 nonprofits partner with it.

It explains what a will has to contain in your state, how many witnesses an advance directive needs and whether a notary counts instead, what a power of attorney does and when it ends, and it links the official state forms where they exist. All of it is free without an account. Premium adds saved planning data and family sharing.

You want a basic will and nothing else

FreeWill is free. Nolo's Starter plan is $109 and LegalZoom's Basic Will is $129. Trust & Will's Will Plan is $199 and includes a living will, a HIPAA authorization and a power of attorney with it. Whatever you use, the will is only valid once it's signed the way your state requires, so read the signing rules first.

You want a living trust

Trust & Will's Trust Plan is $499. LegalZoom's Basic Trust is $399, Nolo's Plus plan with the trust is $149, GoodTrust is $149 and Gentreo is $150 the first year. FreeWill's trust is free and its home page says it's for California residents. A trust only keeps an asset out of probate if the asset is retitled into it, and none of these services does that part for you.

Trust & Will adds a year of attorney phone access for $299, in 43 states. LegalZoom's Pro and Premium tiers bundle consultations that renew at $25 a month or $199 a year. Rocket Lawyer's memberships include a monthly allowance of attorney questions. Or hire a licensed estate attorney directly; the cost story says what that runs.

Nolo includes a year of changes, then $39.99 for another year. Gentreo charges $50 a year after the first. Trust & Will's $49-a-year Essentials membership carries the vault and shipping. GoodTrust includes one year of unlimited updates. Rocket Lawyer's documents live inside the membership, so the changes end when the membership does.

Is there a free version of Trust & Will?

A trust that isn't funded with your assets avoids nothing, and every one of these services leaves the funding to you.

Does any of these make me a law firm's client?

No. Trust & Will, FreeWill, Gentreo and Rocket Lawyer each say they aren't a law firm. LegalZoom says the same, except for advice delivered through its subsidiary law firm, LZ Legal Services. Nolo and GoodTrust say they don't give legal advice. Attorney add-ons and consultations are where a real attorney-client relationship can begin; the document tools aren't.

Do I need a notary for a will from Trust & Will?

Trust & Will's FAQ tells you to sign and notarize the documents when you receive or download them. What your state requires for a valid will is a separate question: most states require witnesses, and a notary is usually for the self-proving affidavit.
